Natural Hair education in cosmetology schools

Starts Here

We are dedicated to making sure texture education is a part of cosmetology school education.

Some of the most nuanced hair textures aren’t being taught in cosmetology schools. The beauty and versatility of these textures are routinely left off of curriculums, and they’re not even required as a part of any written or practical licensing exam. We aim to bring the respect highly textured and multi-textured hair deserves to the forefront, but we cannot achieve our goals alone. Find out how you can help.

Our Commitment

The National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology is not promoting the highest standards for consumer safety and does not encourage competency in the practice of cosmetology when it chooses to focus only on certain hair textures. A licensed cosmetologist in any state, should know how to wash, detangle, blow out, and style highly textured and multi-textured hair, the same as is required for straight or wavy hair textures. It is not enough to only require knowledge about relaxers. The standards of beauty culture education have changed, and the NIC has a duty to change along with them. It is imperative that they promote and support opportunities for equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Take Action

Want to help? You can create a short video telling the NIC why it’s important for highly textured and multi-textured hair to be included on the state board exams.
